What is claimed is:

1. A method for providing digital documents including a common citation structure, comprising:

receiving an input digital document;

processing the input digital document to assign citations to content Objects according to predefined rules; and

providing at least two digital output documents in different formats that contain identical content citations.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the input digital document has been prepared to include predefined markup indicators.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the markup indicators include at least one of explicitly defined document levels and tagged headings.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the predefined rules include recognizing at least one of header identifying data, document level data, tagged headings, semantic data, processing instructions, pattern matching indicia, and document modifiers.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the output comprises at least one of machine readable digital documents and human readable digital documents.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing granular database data output.

11. A method for manipulating a digital document, comprising:

obtaining markup indicators from a digital document;

processing the digital document one Object at a time to assign citation numbers according to the markup indicators; and

generating at least one of a plurality of machine readable documents and a plurality of human readable documents of different format types, wherein each output document incorporates the content of the digital document and includes a common citation system.

12. The method of claim 11, which further comprises repeatedly processing the digital document if necessary to obtain data required to generate the at least one of a plurality of machine readable and human readable documents.
